Mutfak invites Sarnt Utamachote ษาณฑ์ อุตมโชติ

With Julianne Chua & Anna Frehiwot Maconi

Mutfak dishes out diasporic and decolonial perspectives on food, family and fictions peppered with interviews, field recordings, sound archives and poetry. Our goal is to amplify lesser-heard voices and nurture transversal affinities across Afro-Asian diasporas.

In our fourth episode, we speak with artist, curator and filmmaker Sarnt Utamachote. Through their experience as a nonbinary Thai person in Berlin, we unravel the complexity of the lives of Southeast Asian and queer communities in Berlin through the prism of distance and proximity. We come to know of the artist collective un.thai.tled and their ongoing exhibition at Galerie Wedding, IN NOBODY'S SERVICE, focusing on the violent clichés projected on Thai and Filipina women and queer bodies in Germany. In addition, we touch upon topics such as Thai Park, performing gender, kinships and ethnicity, and the political significance of food.

Always room for dessert:

With Guest: Sarnt Utamachote (ษาณฑ์ อุตมโชติ) is a Southeast Asian nonbinary filmmaker and curator based in Berlin. They are a co-founder of un.thai.tled, an artist collective from the German-Thai diaspora, and have curated multiple research-based exhibitions concerning postcolonial histories, the Southeast Asian diaspora, and activism in divided Germany. In 2024, they curated the exhibition/program IN NOBODY’S SERVICE at Galerie Wedding and are part of the guest research and curatorial team of Haus der Kulturen der Welt's Echoes der Bruderländer.
